What Is the Endoscopic Endonasal Approach?

It is transsphenoidal surgery performed with a thin, high-definition endoscope passed through the nostrils, giving the surgeon a bright, wide-angle view of the tumor and the structures around it.

How It Differs From Older Approaches

Earlier transsphenoidal surgery used an operating microscope and sometimes a small incision under the lip or in the nose. The endoscope provides a closer, wider view from inside the nose, and it has largely replaced open craniotomy for most pituitary tumors.

Advantages

Better visualization can help the surgeon see around corners to remove more of the tumor while protecting nearby nerves and blood vessels, all through a minimally invasive route.
