Too Much of a Hormone

Hormone-producing tumors flood the body with one hormone: prolactin (prolactinoma), growth hormone (acromegaly), or ACTH (Cushing disease). Each causes its own pattern of symptoms.

Too Little of a Hormone (Hypopituitarism)

A large tumor can reduce the normal gland's output, causing fatigue, low sex drive, menstrual changes, cold intolerance, and low blood pressure. Loss of the water-balance hormone can cause excessive thirst and urination.

Symptoms in Women and Men

In women, hormonal effects often show up as irregular or absent periods, milk production, or fertility problems. In men, they often show up as low sex drive or erectile dysfunction.

Getting the Right Tests

The right hormone blood tests can confirm which hormone is involved and whether the rest of the gland is healthy.
