What Hormone Testing Looks For

Testing checks two things: whether the tumor is overproducing a hormone, and whether the normal gland is underproducing one.

Common Tests

Typical tests include prolactin; IGF-1 and growth hormone; ACTH and cortisol; TSH and free T4; and LH, FSH, and sex hormones. Your results guide which tumor type, if any, is present.

Testing for Cushing Disease

Because Cushing disease can be subtle, it may need specialized testing such as late-night salivary cortisol, 24-hour urinary free cortisol, or a dexamethasone-suppression test, and occasionally a specialized sampling procedure.
