When Is Pituitary Surgery Needed?

Not every pituitary tumor needs surgery. It is generally recommended when a tumor threatens vision, causes hormone excess that medication cannot control, or is growing. Most prolactinomas, by contrast, are treated first with medication.

How the Surgery Is Done

Most pituitary tumors are removed through the nose using the minimally invasive transsphenoidal approach, now most often done with an endoscope. A small number of large or complex tumors require a different approach.
