What Is a Prolactinoma?

A prolactinoma is a benign pituitary tumor that makes too much of the hormone prolactin. It is the most common type of hormone-producing pituitary tumor.

Symptoms

In women: irregular or absent periods, milk production unrelated to nursing, and infertility. In men: low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and — because tumors are often found later — sometimes vision problems from a larger tumor.

Most Prolactinomas Are Treated With Medication

Unlike other pituitary tumors, most prolactinomas are managed with medication (dopamine agonists such as cabergoline or bromocriptine), which can lower prolactin and shrink the tumor. Many patients never need surgery.

When Surgery Is Needed

Surgery may be considered when medication is not tolerated or does not work, when a tumor causes sudden problems such as apoplexy, or in certain other situations. We will tell you honestly whether an operation is the right choice for you.
